Bill Names Governor's Capitol Office For Engler

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The governor's office in the Michigan Capitol building will be named for former Gov. John Engler if a new bill becomes law.

Republican Rep. Pete Lund of Macomb County's Shelby Township said Wednesday that naming the office for Engler is appropriate because what Engler did to change the direction of Michigan "was incredible and cannot be overstated."

Engler, a Republican, served from 1991 through 2002.

Governors mostly work out of their office in a building across the street from the Capitol. But they sometimes meet with lawmakers and hold news conferences in the Capitol office.

Lund says the inspiration for his bill came when legislators voted in a bipartisan fashion to name the walkway between the Capitol building and the Hall of Justice for former Democratic Attorney General Frank Kelley.
