Consumers Energy Holds Event To Simulate Poverty

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Consumer Energy sponsored a unique simulation, where participants learned about poverty through role playing.

Community leaders were able to see what it's like to have major obligations with minimal resources.

One of the participants was the chairman of the Michigan Public Service Commission. He played a 13-year-old girl needing to provide child care for her little brother.

"We had a 3-year-old in our family. We had to bring it to child care. Every time you go to child care you need transportation. We didn't have a car. So we had to, you know, spend resources to get around and to procure basic services," said John Quackenbush, the chairman.

"We hear about poverty. We don't really know what it is. And this simulation is intended to bring us to that thresh hold and appreciate," said Whitney Skeans with Consumers Energy.

Sponsors of the event hope participants came away with the bigger message.
