Michigan State Trooper Shot During Traffic Stop Dies

SHERMAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLNS) - According to the Michigan State Police, the trooper shot while conducting a traffic stop has died.

Trooper Paul Butterfield of the Hart Post died while in an emergency surgery.

The traffic stop happened around 6:20p.m. near Custer Road in Sherman Township--that's in Mason County, northeast of Ludington.

Two suspects, a man and woman, were taken into custody. When the two were found, officers exhchanged gunfire, hitting the man. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Trooper Butterfield had been with MSP since 1999. He is also a United States Army veteran.

"Tonight we lost a hero," Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue, director of the MSP, said in a release.  "The entire MSP family, as well as our greater law enforcement family, mourns alongside the Butterfields.  Trooper Butterfield's sacrifice will never be forgotten; may he rest in peace."
