Albion Hit Hard By Storm

ALBION, Mich. (WLNS) – Albion was hit hard by the storm that ripped through mid-Michigan tonight, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

Throughout the community, caution tape and flares block off downed wires and blocks roads. Some broken wires dangle without warning. Homes are buried under fallen branches. Toppled trees fill the sidewalks and roads on nearly every street. And most had lost power.

A tree crushed Albion resident Aaron Phipps' car he parked in his driveway. He says he's grateful his wife and infant son, who were taking shelter in their basement during the storm, were not injured. The car, he says, is replaceable.

"Luckily we have insurance so we'll get that claimed and processed and we'll go from there. I need a new car anyway," Phipps said.

Not a half mile down Michigan Avenue, a fallen tree crushed two cars parked in the drive of Leroy Bell's neighbors. He watched as the 60-year-old tree in his backyard came crashing down.

"It broke so easily, I mean when the wind started blowing," Bell said.

From his crushed Ford Fusion, Phipps could only salvage a plastic "baby-on-board" decal. Phipps, whose father passed away recently, says the decal is a sign that "someone" is watching over his family, keeping them safe.
