Albion College Reports Progress On Storm Cleanup

Posted: Updated:

ALBION, Mich. (AP) - Albion College says progress has been made on cleanup following powerful thunderstorms that hit the school's southern Michigan campus and the surrounding area.

The school's interim President Mike Frandsen says in a posting on the school's website that the campus 85 miles west of Detroit will remain closed until Sunday afternoon. Students may return to residence halls at noon that day and classes resume Monday.

Thunderstorms strafed southern and southeast Michigan on Wednesday with up to 80 mph winds, knocking down power lines and trees. The private, four-year college with roughly 1,380 students was hit hard.

The National Weather Service determined Thursday that straight-line winds caused damage around Albion, not a tornado. Damage was concentrated in an area nearly 2 miles long and a half-mile wide.
