Owosso Trekker Eager To Finish Journey

Posted: Updated:

OWOSSO, Mich. (WLNS) - It was supposed to be a "journey of a lifetime." In May, a retired Navy Veteran from Owosso harnessed his mules and set out on a cross country trip to his father's grave in Oklahoma, all to give thanks for his father's military service. But after traveling 1,000 miles, the trip was cut short when a truck rear-ended him, killing his mules and breaking his ribs. And, the bad news doesn't stop there, but neither does his optimism.

The tragedy that came cloaked as a curse was truly a blessing in disguise. "Everything happened for a reason," said Charles Peters, Retired Navy Veteran. "When they gave me a cat scan for my ribs and found my ribs were broken, they actually noticed I had a tumor on my kidney." The tumor was cancerous and one that needed to be removed right away.

After the removal of the tumor, Peters is ready to go again to finish the last 143 miles of his trip, and he says the sooner the better. "I lost the mules, I lost the wagon, I lost my harness, I lost everything. But I didn't lose my desire to take off again."
