Canvassers Go Door to Door for Affordable Care Act

In the weeks leading up to the health exchange market's opening today, Aaron Peake has been among the volunteers in Lansing going door to door  on a mission.

"We're just trying to find anyone who may not have coverage and reach out to them to let them know enrollment starts today," said Peake.

Peake is a volunteer for the "Get Covered" campaign. He and others have worked for weeks to educate people about what he says is an opportunity many have never had before.

"It's one thing to talk about having affordable health insurance. It's another thing when they actually know now this is their opportunity to have that," said Peake.

"The 'Get Covered' American campaign is a grassroots community driven effort to give folks the just facts and information they need and that they want to make the best health care decisions for themselves and their families," said Shawn Dhanak, communications director for the campaign here in Michigan.

Dhanak says the task isn't easy, but says it's a worthy effort.

"We are going door to door to churches to barbershops, anywhere we can reach folks and have those personal conversations to educate them about these new options and ultimately mobilize them to take a look at the marketplace," said Dhanak.

Dhanak says the groups mission is not only to educate, but to insure as many uninsured people as they can under the exchange.

Peake admits, even he had trouble understanding the exchange at first. That drove him to volunteer and enlighten people.

"There's got to be a lot of people in the community that don't know either, so I thought this would be a great chance to go out and try to do my part," said Peake.

He says most people in Mid-Michigan are thankful for the help. Others are more thankful for the prospect of having health care coverage for the first time.
