Man Charged After Trooper Leaves Gun In Bathroom

Posted: Updated:

KALKASKA, Mich. (AP) - A man who found a state trooper's loaded handgun in a northern Michigan grocery store bathroom has been charged for failing to report the weapon.

Police say the off-duty trooper who used the restroom inside the Kalkaska store on May 20 and accidentally left the gun atop a toilet paper dispenser, meanwhile, is on active duty. And state police spokeswoman Shanon Banner says the trooper won't face disciplinary action.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports Timothy Alan Flanagan, 49, of Fife Lake could face up to 10 years behind bars if convicted. A trial is planned Dec. 17.

Flanagan says he brought the gun home with "all intentions" of calling police, but he feared repercussions as time passed.

The trooper is from the Wayland Post in Allegan County.
