Father Testifies In McCowan's Murder Trial

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Connor McCowan's father, Randy, took the stand Tuesday in the courtroom where his son is charged with stabbing and killing MSU Senior Andrew Singler.

Randy was the first person Connor told about the fight that ultimately lead to Singler's death on Feb. 23. He said his son was visibly upset, shaking and crying. "He thought he was going to kill him, so, he cut him," Randy said, as he acted out the scene his son described to him.

Randy told the court he had known Singler for two years and that he was like another son. Connor's eyes welled with tears as his father told attorneys about the brotherly relationship between Connor and Singler. "He was like a big brother, or a mentor, to Connor."

Emotion turned from tearful to tense, as Prosecuting Attorney John DeWayne told Randy, "Sir, your son is charged with murder."

DeWayne questioned Randy's new testimony, including the three punches he said Singler threw at Connor. "You agree with me, in the past six or seven months, you never, ever contacted law enforcement to relay the information you've testified today, correct?" he asked.

"Correct," answered Randy. He said February police reports quote him inaccurately on several points and he was just looking out for his son.

Following testimony, Randy hugged family and friends. He sat behind his son, as testimony from the crime scene investigator and a DNA analyst began.

Connor's father, Randy, and sister, Shay, testified in court Monday as Connor choked back tears. Shay was dating Singler at the time and told the court she, Singler and Connor were best friends.

The trial is expected to continue Thursday morning, when the case's lead investigator will testify.
