Thousands Head To MSU For Homecoming

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- It was a sea of green and white at Spartan stadium, as over 85,000 Michigan State University fans celebrated homecoming and the 500th home game.

"Homecoming is always the biggest because we have alumni that are coming back to the university, so there's people that wouldn't normally be here," said Sgt. McGlothian Taylor of Michigan State University's police department.

Alumni, like Cathie Adams, who flew all the way from Washington D.C. to visit her alma mater and tailgate with friends.

"I'm a Spartan through and through," Adams said. "I love them, even though I don't live here anymore. I bleed green and white."

Adams graduated in 2001 and hasn't been back since. She said her friend surprised her with tickets and, for the first time ever, she watched the game from inside Spartan stadium.

"It's a pretty fun day for me," said Adams. "You hear the hoots and the hollers. Even flying here I wore my Spartan gear and my Detroit gear. It's fun to talk a little smack and have a little fun."

Alumni and students alike wore green and white hoodies, hats and t-shirts, tailgated with green cups and flew Spartan flags. Fans said tailgated bring them together, and it's a great chance to meet new friends.

"Tailgating every time is a big deal, so the 500th game is just an even bigger deal," said MSU Junior Peter Ferszt. "We're all just having a really good time and I think that that's the most important part."

Bringing home the win against Indiana didn't hurt either.
