Local Clinic Offers Free Cervical Cancer Screenings

A local medical clinic is giving women a chance to fight against one of the deadliest cancers in the world, cervical cancer.

It all happened at the second annual Pap-o-rama event in East Lansing today.

The free event screened women for the cancer and gave them a chance to spot early detection.

"Women in general are the gate keepers," said LaKeeya Tucker, physician at Alliance Ob/Gyn. "We tend to take care of everybody else and we tend to put ourselves last."

But today 121 women in are putting themselves first.

"There are so many women that feel so rewarded and feel that we are doing such a great service," said Tucker.

Women who do not have health insurance and fall well below the poverty level were invited for free cervical cancer examination at Alliance obstetrics and gynecology today

"We felt the need to reach out to the community and provide this service," said Tucker.

"To have health insurance is a real issue for some women," said Liz Price, nurse practitioner at Alliance.

There is no other event like its kind in the area, helping mothers, daughters and sisters fight against a cancer that claims more than 4 thousand lives each year.

"Last year, we had 15 people who had abnormal's and all of them needed a colposcopy which is where we look at the cervix under the microscope," said Tucker.

Pap-smears are basic screening measures that is covered under Obamacare. So the women at the clinic today will be covered for the test next year, essentially putting the pap-o-rama event out of business

"We'll be looking for other things to give the Lansing area boost up in health care," said Price.

But for now, they'll help fight cervical cancer, one woman at a time.
