LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Mayor Virg Bernero says he has appointed Interim Chief Mike Yankowski as Lansing's Chief of Police.

Yankowski is a 19-year veteran and has led the Lansing Police Department since April 2013 as interim police chief. He's also served the city as a police officer, canine handler and field training officer. He was then promoted to sergeant, lieutenant and captain.

"It's an absolute honor and privilege to be named Lansing's Police Chief for this great organization. It's one of the finest police organization's in the state," said Yankowski.

The Board of Police Commissioners voted unanimously to appointment Chief Yankowski.

"He impressed us all. He impressed me and he impressed the board of police commissioners," said Mayor Bernero.

"Every position he's held with the Lansing Police Department has been a leadership role, so, it's natural for him to be at the top," said Sandra Kowalk-Thompson, the chair of Lansing Police Department Board of Police Commissioners.

Yankowski says he plans to stay community oriented and use data-driven information to find and prevent Lansing crime. "We're going to continue to focus on the most violent offenders, the most violent locations in the city. We're going to hold them accountable and we're going to use all of our resources to make sure we hold those accountable to keep this city safe."
