ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor is getting nearly $1.5 million as part of new federal grants aimed at boosting business investment.

The U.S. Department of Commerce on Tuesday announced $20.5 million in Make it in America Challenge funding, including money for the center.

A description of the project says the funding will in part support research into bio-based product manufacturing and its relationships to the automotive manufacturing sector. It also will provide technical assistance to businesses and offer job skills training.

The Michigan project includes 22 counties in southeast Michigan.

Overall, the Department of Commerce says the projects include backing for regional economic development, advanced skills training, greater supply chain access and other efforts.
