Bills Keep Welfare Recipients From Certain ATMs

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan lawmakers want to prevent welfare recipients from drinking liquor, gambling on horses or going to the strip club with public money.

The Senate on Tuesday approved bills to prevent people from using their electronic benefits card to get cash from ATMs in liquor stores, horse tracks or adult entertainment businesses. The legislation requires the Department of Human Services to work with the establishments on a way to block withdrawals from the machines.

Gov. Rick Snyder last year signed a similar law related to casino ATMs.

A nonpartisan fiscal analysis estimates it could cost the state at least $120,000 a year to block cash withdrawals from certain ATMs.

The six bills passed overwhelmingly, though three Democrats opposed some of them.
