Conference Focuses On Detroit River, W. Lake Erie

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - Scientists and government officials are gathering Monday to discuss environmental problems and progress in the Detroit River and western Lake Erie.

The biennial State of the Strait conference is being held at the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario.

Experts have studied the area's waters for decades. But most information has shown ups and downs through time with little sense of whether long-term goals are being achieved.

The meeting is intended to focus on measurements that help set solid targets for restoring the waterways.

Speakers will describe how the targets are being used to guide management programs like the Detroit River Remedial Action Plan, the Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, the Lake Erie Lakewide Management Plan and watershed management plans in the area.
