Detroit Crime Tour Tells And Sells Macabre History

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - A black-caped woman guides more than two dozen people through downtown Detroit as night falls, spinning ghoulish and grisly tales from the city's history.

Karin Risko is host and creator of the "Notorious 313 True Crime & Ghost Tour." She says her tour highlights the sinister and macabre but isn't an attempt to capitalize on the ills of the Motor City - often called "Murder City."

Her three-hour walking tour isn't all murder, but it does explore death in Detroit from the 1700s to the 1990s. Stops include scenes of deadly fires and a former morgue where coroners accused one another of conducting unauthorized experiments on corpses.

Some say Risko is cashing in on the crime that still plagues the city, but tour-goers say the stories are worth exploring.
