Problems Persist For Enrolling Under New Health Exchange

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Problems continue for those who want to sign up for insurance under the new health exchange. The launch of open enrollment for health insurance under the new exchange has been rocky to say the least.

In Ingham County, there are agencies that are supposed to help people enroll in a health care plan, but they haven't been as responsive as advertised.

There's a prompt when calling Health Alliance of Michigan, which is listed on the Enroll Michigan website, but when you dial the extension, all that's heard is a voicemail.

Despite several calls throughout the day, the only connect 6 News received was to a voicemail. In fact, both agencies listed to help people enroll were called multiple times; one promises to get back to you as soon as possible and the other says within 24 hours. Our messages from last week still haven't been returned.

The only place that did respond is the Ingham County Health Department and officials there say there's only so much they can do.

"Even today we had someone in and we tried to walk them through the enrollment, but it stopped us pretty much at the first couple of steps," said Nancy Diawara, the program specialist with the Ingham County Health Department.

Diawara says they've shown quite a few people their options under the health exchange, but so far because of glitches in the national healthcare website, not one has actually been able to enroll.

If you're interested in at least learning more about your options under the health exchange, officials at the Ingham County Health Department are available at 517-887-4306.
