East Lansing Police Ready For Busy Halloween Streets

The wet weather made it difficult for police to patrol the roads this Halloween.

Our Nick Perreault found out with it being Halloween and a big weekend around the corner, police were going to be out in numbers to make sure everyone has a fun, but safe time celebrating on the streets of East Lansing.

"It's just a fun night to work," said East Lansing Police Lt. Steve Gonzalez.

Lt. Gonzalez agrees there is quite the increased workload. He's been patrolling East Lansing streets for 16 years and says every Halloween it's a challenge.

A challenge due to the unique downtown area and the amount of people out and about in the city.

"We try to get the cars out in the neighborhoods you know just as a presence, if for no other reason than to try to slow down traffic in the neighborhoods and offer any assistance."

The lieutenant says keeping an eye on the little ones is one job, but dealing with the adult crowd, who often use Halloween to party hard is a real trick.

"We do experience a higher level of people that have had too much alcohol to drink and need medical assistance," Lt. Gonzalez said.

Assistance that forces officers to look out for more than just "trick or treaters" crossing the street.

"I think our job function changes a little bit to a combined enforcement and safety effort."

So East Lansing police put more cars on the roads to make sure those who go out have a good time and don't end up living or causing a scary nightmare.

"Our biggest concern is that everybody has a good time, but want to do it in a safe manner, it's definitely a treat, we'll see later it might be a trick," Lt. Gonzalez said.
