LOS ANGELES (CBS) - A gunman opened fired at a TSA checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport, triggering a massive police response and an evacuation.

One TSA employee is dead and four others are injured.

Police and paramedics swarmed terminal three at LAX after a man opened fire this morning.
He proceeded to move into the screening area where the tsa agents are and continued shooting, past the screening room into the airport itself.

"One man in a TSA uniform was able to walk out, but another employee was rushed out in a wheelchair, with an apparent chest wound," said Patrick Gannon, LAX Police Chief.

Passengers inside the terminal heard the gunshots.

"Right when I heard the gunshots I looked over my shoulder and everybody was running saying "run run!" said a passenger.

"I noticed he a had an assault rifle, a huge gun, slung over his shoulder and hanging down his waist," said Billy Bey, Passenger.

Authorities evacuated the terminal and set up a triage area.

"We got out and they told us to get underneath the planes," said a witness.

The suspect is in custody and wounded.
