3 In Custody After Conn. College Lockdown

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: 4:24 p.m. NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - Authorities say three people are in custody following reports of an armed man that prompted a lockdown at Connecticut State University.

Chris Cervoni, chief of the campus police, says authorities are investigating whether the scare was actually some kind of prank. He says no weapons have been recovered, there was no real threat to the campus and no charges have been filed.

The university declared a campus emergency at about noon Monday after people reported seeing a person on campus with what was believed to be a gun. The lockdown was lifted several hours later.

One student, Jordan Governale, says he walked by a masked man carrying a sword. He says he first took it for a Halloween costume but thought it was a threat after seeing the police response.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (CBS) - A spokesperson says the Central Connecticut State University campus in New Britain is in emergency mode.

Shortly after noon Monday, Central Connecticut State University posted via their Twitter page that the campus is in the midst of an unidentified emergency. The University has urged everyone on campus to remain indoors, seek shelter and stay clear of all windows.

New Britain Police are on the campus now, and the university is asking everyone to seek shelter, lock windows and doors, and stay in place.

A university spokesperson would not say why this emergency order was being given. More than 12,000 students attend the university, which has a 182-acre campus.

A message was posted on the school's website: "Get inside buildings & Stay in place! Stay away from Windows. Police are on the Scene."

New Britain Public Schools say HALS Academy and Holmes Elementary School are in a modified lockdown due to the emergency on the CCSU campus.
