Sister Speaks Out Following Brother's Sentencing

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - During the Connor McCowan trial, many people questioned Shay McCowan's responsibility in the murder. Shay is Connor's sister. But she was also dating Andrew Singler, the man Connor was convicted of killing just weeks ago.

"Being caught in the middle of two people you love so much, you feel stuck. There's not much you can do," said Shay.

During the trial, Shay sat behind her brother, but says she wasn't choosing sides.

"I'm supporting the relationship the three of us had."

Shay calls them the three best friends, but during the trial, many people pointed fingers at her.

"People have gone out of the way to send me hate mail. I get messages weekly from people I have never heard before just saying this is all my fault and it's hard to not feel guilty," she said.

Some blame Shay's alcohol fueled text messages on Singler and Connor's fatal fight. That February morning, Shay texted Connor, telling him Singler broke her rib and called her "awful names." Soon after, Connor headed to Singler's to straighten things out.

"I'd been drinking. I was in a lot of pain and I over exaggerated and I've admitted that," Shay said.

She says she would do anything to take her actions back, but believes Singler still looks out for Connor, despite his actions during the fatal fight. "I write Andrew almost every day. I keep it in a notebook. I'm never going to forget about him."

The McCowan family says they believe their son acted in self-defense and they plan to appeal the conviction.
