Posted: Updated:

IRON RIVER, Mich. (AP) - A 68-foot tall spruce in Iron River has been cut down to be Michigan's state Christmas tree.

The Daily News of Iron Mountain reports the tree fell Wednesday and will be displayed on the Capitol grounds in Lansing throughout the holiday season. Hundreds of spectators were on hand for the event in the Upper Peninsula community.

The tree was donated by Jonny and Barbara Waara. Denny Olson of the Michigan Association of Timbermen spotted the tree and advised them to nominate it.
