Senate Votes To Let Bars Buy Logoed Beer Glasses

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Senate has voted to lift a ban on bars and restaurants serving beer in logoed glasses.

But critics say the bill approved 34-3 Thursday doesn't go far enough and allows too much government intrusion into private establishments.

The legislation headed to the House lets retailers use brand-logoed glassware only if it's bought from a third party and not directly from alcohol manufacturers and wholesalers. Bars would have to submit their purchase order to regulators for approval, which is drawing withering criticism from the Michigan Restaurant Association.

The bill only applies to glassware and still keeps bars and restaurants from having beer company logos on other items like plates, lights and pool tables.

Regulators have signaled a willingness to allow logoed items. The bill would take precedence, though.
