TMSG: Family Raises Awareness For Preemie Babies

Posted: Updated:

With World Premature Birth Day coming up next week, as well as an important local March of Dimes event, organizers hope to raise awareness about preemie babies.

"We learned that our little guy didn't have heartbeat. We had lost him," remembers Heather Schroder.

No words can sum up what Heather and her husband, Glenn, of Lansing felt the morning their first son, Wyatt, was stillborn prematurely.

"In '09 when everything happened, you're in a bad place. You don't know how to move forward," said Heather.

But thanks to the March of Dimes in Michigan, their family is not only moving forward, but also growing bigger.

In 2011, Heather and Glenn received a double-dose of good news. They were first approved to adopt little Garret into the family and 9-months later, they welcomed handsome Hayden into the world.

"We're very humbled. It's been a roller coaster, but we're sitting pretty well today," said Glenn.

As for Heather's wellness, she says her second pregnancy stayed clear of the complications she first encountered when she learned after losing Wyatt that she had factor five lieden, a blood clotting disorder. That led to pre-eclampsia and ultimately the loss of her first son.

But in her moment of tragic loss, the local March of Dimes made sure she and her doctors had plenty to gain. "This is what we need to do, this is how we're going to go ahead and have a healthy pregnancy with you," remembers Heather.

If you'd like to support the Schroeder family and the March for Babies, check out the March of Dimes Signature Chef's Auction at the Kellogg Center Monday night. It goes from 5:30-9pm.
