East Lansing Medal Of Honor Winner To Be Honored

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A monument honoring a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient is to be dedicated in East Lansing.

The Medal of Honor monument honoring U.S. Marine Corps Reserve 2nd Lt. Sherrod Skinner Jr. is to be dedicated in front of the Hannah Community Center on Monday, which is Veterans Day.

The East Lansing Rotary Club and the city partnered to raise funds for the monument, which serves as a permanent memorial to Skinner.

He grew up in East Lansing and received the Medal of Honor posthumously for bravery during the Korean War. He threw himself on an enemy grenade, sacrificing his life in an effort to protect his surviving comrades.

The plan is to expand the area in future years to incorporate a Veterans Garden honoring all veterans.
