Hamilton Teacher Starts Student Volunteer Club

Posted: Updated:

HAMILTON, Mich. (AP) - The first event for a new volunteer club at Hamilton High School was so popular a homeless shelter did not have enough room for all of the students who wanted to help.

The Holland Sentinel reports that Spanish and German teacher Lauren Stieper started the club and quickly realized just how much students enjoy giving back to their community.

Stieper says she was "happily surprised" when about 40 students registered to volunteer for the first event last month at the Holland Rescue Mission. That was more than the Holland Rescue Mission needed.

Events are held once a month on Saturdays. The district covers the cost of gas and rental fees for district vehicles to allow Stieper and chaperones to shuttle students to sites.
