Local Woman Heads To Philippines

Posted: Updated:

EAGLE, Mich. (WLNS) -- Just days after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, the outpouring of concern and support continues, including help from mid-Michigan.

Kelly Sites anxiously awaits the phone call that sends her to the Philippines.

"I was begging for the call to come because I knew I needed to be there to help," Sites said.

As a disaster relief nurse for Samaritan's Purse, sites remains ready, at a moment's notice, to hop on a plane and lend a hand to those who desperately need help.

Sites has served multiple times in Haiti and now patiently awaits her month-long departure to the Philippines. There, the team plans to set up medical treatment centers and work to get people water and food.

"The people are extremely grateful and they feel relieved to know that somebody cares and somebody knows what they're going through," Sites said.

Just six months ago, Sites traveled to the Samaritan's Purse headquarters in North Carolina to train for disaster relief. She said she's thankful for the training because, now, she feels fully prepared and is eager to get to the Philippines.

"People are hopeless and they need help and they're hungry and they're thirsty and they're sick and they're scared and they're in shock," Sites said. "I think we're prepared for whatever we see."

Sites said she's also prepared to leave, which could come as soon as Tuesday night. However, the trip means a month away from her family during the holidays.

"It's going to be a difficult situation, but it's not going to be anything, with what those people are going through," Sites said. "I'm just blessed to be able to go in and help."

A blessing for Sites, and the thousands of lives she touches along the way.
