DeWitt had four straight semifinal defeats entering the Division III semi with St. Clair.
In the third quarter, DeWitt was in trouble, down 20-14, until Ben Zamara got picky. He returned an intercption down to the 20 yardline.
That set up big Ben Heinritz for one of his two touchdown runs in the game. Extra point, good. Dewitt takes a 21-20 lead.
Late in the 4th, things get wild. St. Clair marching down for a game-winning score. Bo Meldrum took a screen pass to the 10.
All the Saints needed was a short field goal to take the lead. But they never kicked field goals during the season, which includes extra points. They usually go for two, and that lack of experience cost them the game.
The field goal attempt was nowhere close, and DeWitt finally got the lucky break in the state semifinal, 21-20. The Panthers are now heading to Ford Field for the state title game next Saturday night.
