WATCH: Fighting A Five Year, Invisible War

Posted: Updated:

Disease comes in so many different forms, it can be unbelievably overwhelming if you start to think about it. From viruses to bacteria, to chronic ailments to accidental injury, millions of Americans suffer every day. And many do it silently.

Invisible illnesses is a challenge for more than who are dealing with a diagnosis, but also those around them. When no symptom is visible, too often we turn our backs and think "they must be faking." But it's during those times to reach out and help.

My name is Amy Akers and I suffer from ulcerative colitis. I battled almost three years before being given my diagnosis. I tried a handful of doctors and countless medications and tests before I realized I was fighting a losing battle inside of myself.

Tonight, I bring you along my nearly five year journey on a disease that has no cure, that I silently battled while trying to live a normal life. I hope you're able to tune in.

Remember, if you're facing a challenge, you are never alone. There are resources and people out there to give you the support you need and deserve.
