Mich. Family Finds Black Widow Spider In Grape Bag

Posted: Updated:

CHATHAM, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan family found a black widow spider inside a bag of grapes bought at a Wal-Mart store.

Gloria Johnson says the spider crawled out of the bag after her mother washed the grapes in the sink.

The 11-year-old from the Upper Peninsula community of Chatham tells WLUC-TV she saw the red hourglass shape on the bottom of the spider, then put it in a jar of alcohol and killed it.

Gloria says her 3-year-old sister already had eaten some of the black seedless grapes before they noticed the spider. She wasn't hurt.

In a statement, Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. apologizes to the Johnson family and says its "Marquette branch has looked through the other merchandise in the store and did not find any other spiders."
