Local Nurse Heads To Philippines For Disaster Relief

Posted: Updated:

DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLNS) - Ashley Forsberg of Delta Township is headed halfway around the world this holiday season to the Philippines to help in disaster relief from the typhoon two weeks ago.

With the death toll from the typhoon topping 4,000 and more than 4 million displaced, the Sparrow nurse says the need for volunteers is dire. She's heading there with the Registered Nurse Response Network (RNRN), a volunteer group that provides disaster relief all around the world.

"I think it's a natural calling for most nurses--they want to go and help where ever they can," said Forsberg.

It's not the first time Forsberg has answered that call. After an earthquake rocked Haiti in 2010, she was on the ground within three weeks.

"You go thinking you're going to just help people and be there and it ends up moving you, you know. Maybe even more than it does them. Because they're at their worst and many of them are still happy, still smiling," she said.

She says her goal is to bring aid, medical care and smiles to as many people affected by the typhoon as she can.
