Groups Seek 3rd Mich. Ballot Issue On Wolf Hunting

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A pro-hunting coalition is launching a campaign to collect petition signatures seeking a possible third statewide vote next November on hunting wolves in Michigan.

Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management will ask the state to approve the form of its petition Monday. The coalition includes the Michigan United Conservation Clubs and hunting groups.

Their measure would let the Natural Resources Commission name game species, protecting Michigan's new wolf hunt. The state says that hunters had killed 17 wolves in the Upper Peninsula through Monday morning.

An anti-wolf hunt group gathered enough signatures to require a referendum on a law classifying the wolf as a game species. The Legislature then enacted a second measure authorizing the Natural Resources Commission to make the same designation, and activists seek a referendum on that, too.
