Pilots Become MSP's Eyes In The Sky

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- From thousands of feet above the ground, pilots become eyes in the sky for the Michigan State Police.

"Anything to assist law enforcement we can do with our aircraft," said Sgt. Jerry King, a pilot with the Michigan State Police.

Four pilots man the unit, with a fleet of three aircrafts. It includes an airplane and two helicopters pilots use to spot missing people, track down felons and even guard US boarders.

The Aviation Unit's based in Lansing, but gets calls from police departments across the state.

"They'll call our operations and we'll deploy to where the request is, that could be across the bridge, it could be over by Lake Michigan. It's 24/7," Sgt. King said.

Pilots with the Michigan State Police work around the clock, but they also spend two to three days each week training with departments, like the Canine Unit.

"When we're not on a mission we're doing book work and we're doing training missions so that we're prepared and we're as safe as we can be and that means a lot of hours of training and just practicing," Sgt. King said.

Monday, pilots took the Canine Unit up in the chopper to get the dogs used to the speed, height and noise.

The MSP Units work together to serve the community as a team.
