S.T.O.P.P.E.D Program Promotes Safe Teen Driving

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - As we get closer to Christmas, teen drivers may be asking for more time in the car to buy gifts or maybe visit friends and family, but often times new drivers amongst heavy traffic cause parents to worry.

A new teen driving program may be able to help parents and remind teens that it's important to drive safe.

The program is called S.T.O.P.P.E.D, which stands for "Sheriffs Telling our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers."

It involves an easy sign up by the parent and a sticker to alert sheriffs of which cars are participants in the program.

The program has been in Michigan since 2005, but was recently adopted by Eaton, Jackson and Livingston Counties this year.

Eaton County sheriffs say the initiative reminds teen drivers that someone is always paying attention.

Once parents sign up, the registered sticker is placed in the front window. If the teen is pulled over the parent will be told where the car was stopped, the number of passengers, the reason for the stop and whether a citation was issued.

Eaton County sheriffs say there are more than 20,000 vehicles registered in the program all over Michigan.
