Scholar: Improve Math Standing In U.S. By More Math Exposure

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - As American students continue to lag behind international peers in math skills, an MSU scholar says the United States could improve its standing by increasing exposure to formal math, such as algebra and geometry.

William Schmidt, a university distinguished professor of education and statistics, also says that math instruction needs to be more consistent throughout the nation and in line with the new common core state standards.

Michigan lawmakers are still trying to work out the best way to implement those standards.
