Meridian Twp. Approves Mall Expansion

Posted: Updated:

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLNS) - The Board of Trustees in Meridian Township unanimously passed a request for an expansion of the Meridian Mall Tuesday night.

The project will add more benches, lights and bike racks, but the big draw could be the new stores that could be following. Board members mentioned clothing retailer H&M as a possible addition.

Along with this expansion, they also discussed what grocery retailer "Whole Foods" needs to do in order to move into Meridian Township. Before that can happen, the grocery chain needs to work through several issues, including an ordinance that limits how big a sign can be outside of a store.

"They almost overlooked Meridian Township because of our sign ordinance, they're pretty restrictive. But, again the tenaciousness of this land owner, we were able to come in to talk to them and be able to tell them we can work with them on the sign size," said Angela Wilson, a board trustee.

Meridian Township board members also talked about potential traffic challenges that will come with the addition of the store.
