Nelson Mandela, South Africa's President, Dies

Posted: Updated:

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) - South Africa's president says Nelson Mandela has died at age 95.

Jacob Zuma says "we've lost our greatest son."

Mandela was the civil rights leader of South Africa. He spent most of his life fighting for freedom in what was then a racist state and spent much of his life behind bars because of that fight.

But not only was he released from prison, he went on to become the first black president of that country. He won admirers from around the world for the way he brought that divided country together. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.

Mandela was South Africa's first black president and one of the world's most beloved statesmen.
