Huge Crowd, Fire Near MSU Campus

There's a huge crowd and a large fire burning in the middle of the street just blocks from the MSU campus.

Police on the scanners had estimated the crowd near the Cedar Village apartments at 100 to 200, but 6 News reporter Joe Khalil - who is on the scene - says the crowd is much larger.

He also says there's a big fire in the street that people are feeding with trees, furniture, and anything else they can find.

As of 1:20 a.m., he says he does not see any officers near the melee.

Police are on the scene. According to 6 News crews and scanner traffic, East Lansing police and Michigan State Police are in the area - but they don't seem to be engaging the raucous crowd.

The Cedar Village area is marked by a large series of apartments. It sits about a block or two east of the MSU campus.

It's a traditional campus hot spot. It's the site of some of the largest gatherings, fires, and riots following MSU basketball games during March Madness. It's also the site of the occasional "CedarFest" party, which has also turned into riots.

6 News has a crew on the scene. We will continue to update online and tomorrow on 6 News.
