Board Supports $27.7 Million For Land, Recreation

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The board overseeing the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund is recommending spending nearly $27.7 million on 76 land acquisitions and recreation development projects.

The fund consists of royalties paid to the state by companies that develop minerals on public lands.

The board endorsed spending $19 million on land purchases.

One grant would buy 8 acres along the east arm of Grand Traverse Bay for a boat launch and water access site. Oakland County would get funding for a 291-acre parcel on Young Lake.

Other purchases would include a section of abandoned rail corridor in Detroit that would be part of a 26-mile greenway loop. In Marquette County, a grant would buy 9 acres with Lake Superior and Dead River shoreline.

The Legislature must approve the grants before they are awarded.
