Judge To Decide Restitution In Kilpatrick Case

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) - Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is relying on others to tell him how much he owes the city.

Kilpatrick has waived his attendance at a court hearing Tuesday that will determine his restitution, two months after he was sentenced to 28 years in prison for corruption at city hall.

The government says Kilpatrick should be ordered to pay $4.5 million to Detroit and $195,000 to the Internal Revenue Service. He and pal Bobby Ferguson were convicted of bribery, extortion and other crimes.

Kilpatrick's attorneys are objecting to the hefty bill. They say it's not supported by enough evidence.

Kilpatrick is at a federal prison in Milan in southeastern Michigan while awaiting a possible transfer to Texas to be closer to family.
