Lawmakers OK bill Against Indefinite Detention

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan lawmakers have given final approval to legislation that would prohibit state and local law enforcement officials from helping the federal government indefinitely detain American citizens without charges.

The bill sent to Gov. Rick Snyder on Wednesday would bar active duty Michigan National Guard members and other officials from helping to detain citizens indefinitely.

The bill is a response to a provision in the National Defense Authorization Act that allows the indefinite detention of some terrorism suspects, which civil liberty activists say is unconstitutional.

Backers say the bill does not interfere with federal law because it only bans local officials from assisting in indefinite detention, not from carrying it out.
