East Lansing Officials Say They Arrested 'At Random' Following MSU Win

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - East Lansing officials are now saying that they arrested people at "random" the night following Michigan State's win over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship.

Captain Jeff Murphy with the East Lansing Fire Department said "we could easily clear that crowd using chemical agents." However, he says their strategy was to arrest 15 people to deter the rest of the crowd.

"Those people were all arrested at random. They were all within 300 feet of the fire," said Cpt. Murphy, a misdemeanor in East Lansing.

Three more people (Oscar Mansky, 18, Ibrahim Oloko, 18, Tyler Osgood, 20) were arraigned Wednesday. Of the 15 total arrested Saturday, seven have now been charged with disorderly conduct.

"I saw a cop point at me and say hey, grab that kid! Cop just smashed my arm down, put my hands behind my back. My camera went flying," said Izak Gracy, a documentary student at MSU and one of the 15 arrested.

He adds he hasn't seen his camera since. Gracy said he thinks it's unfair that while others destroyed property and started fires, it's he who now has a misdemeanor on his record.

At least 57 fires were started following the game, costing around $10,000 worth of damage. Despite the school's history of destructive behavior following major sporting events, this was the first to occur during football season.

Police are offering up to $20,000 for tips that lead to convictions. If you have any information, tips can be shared by emailing elpdtips@elpolice.com, 1-877-ELPD-TIP or the ELPD Facebook.

If the 15 arrested are found guilty, the charges are punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.
