Michigan Among 23 Other States With Abortion Restrictions

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - On Wednesday, the Republican-controlled Michigan Legislature has passed a law banning almost all abortion coverage from health insurance plans unless an additional policy is bought.

"Women need comprehensive care for services if and when they need them," said meghan groen, the director of government relations at planned parenthood.

They're services that Groen says can be very costly. "A couple hundred dollars, up to tens of thousands if we're looking at a woman in a severe health crisis."

The costs are some that most insurance companies would cover, but votes in the House and Senate Wednesday now put the burden on individual women, forcing them to pay for additional coverage.

"Now women will have to prepare in advance, even if they're raped, if their health is at risk, they will need this rider coverage," said Groen.

According to a policy research group, 23 other states have passed similar legislation that restricts abortion care. Some limit private insurance plans, others limit coverage for public workers. Seven states require women to purchase a separate plan or rider like Michigan.

"We don't know what that cost of a rider will be or even if they're available on the marketplace," said Groen.

Exceptions will be given when an abortion is necessary to prevent long-lasting health problems for a woman, but those who oppose this new law are not impressed.

"We're really looking at a situation where the legislature passed something that we just have absolutely no idea how it's going to work out on the ground to impact women," Groen said.
