'Tis The Season For Identity Theft

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - As Christmas nears, many Michiganders are lighting up the ATMs with their debit and credit cards.

But amidst all the holiday cheer we may overlook our financial security.

Identity theft has become the fastest growing crime in America.

Every minute 19 people become victims. It takes, on average, $500 and 30 hours for these victims to resolve the mess.

The author of Identity Theft Dos and Don'ts, Scott Merritt, stopped by 6 This Morning and shared some key ways to secure finances.

One of his biggest tips is to use a credit card instead of a debit card when shopping.

He also recommends shoppers directly visit the company website when shopping. Receiving fraudulent website links during the holidays is common.

Today's thieves have evolved from yesterday's dumpster divers, mail snatchers and shoulder surfers. 21st century identity thieves are savvy SMShers, Vishers, hackers and website duplicators.
