Local Nurse Returns Home From Helping In Philippines

Posted: Updated:

CLINTON COUNTY, Mich. (WLNS) - A local nurse is back home in Mid-Michigan after a spending a month in the Philippines helping typhoon victims.

"I knew it was going to hit because, when you're there working, you're just so busy and you're working so hard that you just don't have the time to fully feel the emotions of what you've seen," said Kelly Sites.

Following last month's super typoon, Sites spent more than 30 days in the Philippines. There, she worked along-side dozens of disaster team volunteers from "Samaritan's Purse."

The organization set up a field hospital to treat injuries and illnesses. They brought victims clean water, food and, above all, hope.

"I also took care of a little boy who stepped on a rusty nail and he had a really bad infected foot. So, I cleaned out his wound and found out that he had watched his mom and little sister die. So, just to be able to provide him love and compassion and to play with him a little bit, was really an awesome blessing for me," remembers Sites.

She has helped disaster-torn countries around the world, but says the Philippines destruction blew her away. "It just looked like a nuclear bomb had gone off there."

While Sites is home with her family this holiday, she says a part of her heart stays in the Philippines. "I'm thrilled to be home, but knowing that they're not going to have a Christmas with their family, they've lost so much and they're struggling. My heart hurts for them."
