Trial Decision Next In Mich. Fatal Porch Shooting

Posted: Updated:

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit-area judge is holding a hearing to determine if a man will face a murder trial in the shooting of a 19-year-old woman on his porch.

There is no dispute that Theodore Wafer fired a shotgun through a door and fatally struck Renisha McBride in the wee hours on Nov. 2. Dearborn Heights Judge David Turfe (TUR'-fee) holds a hearing Wednesday to decide if there's enough evidence to send the second-degree murder case to trial.

Police say McBride was on Wafer's porch after crashing her car blocks away. Tests after her death showed she was drunk.

Defense attorneys are expected to argue that the 54-year-old Wafer feared for his life. Civil rights groups believe race was a factor. The victim was black, while Wafer is white.
