Man Who Shot Woman On Porch Will Face Murder Trial

Posted: Updated:

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit-area man who admits shooting a young, drunk woman on his porch will stand trial for second-degree murder.

Judge David Turfe found enough evidence to send Theodore Wafer to trial after vigorous arguments from lawyers Thursday about the 54-year-old's intent and Michigan's self-defense law.

Wafer shot 19-year-old Renisha McBride in the face in the early hours of Nov. 2. He fired through a screen door at his Dearborn Heights home. The judge says he made a "bad choice."

Wafer's attorneys say he feared for his life and should be shielded by a self-defense law. Prosecutor Danielle Hagaman-Clark says it's "ridiculous" that Wafer was afraid but still opened his door instead of calling the police.

McBride had been in a car wreck hours earlier and wandered to Wafer's home.
