Some At Indiana Bemused With Michigan Grad Speaker

Posted: Updated:

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Some graduating Indiana University students are scratching their heads that the University of Michigan's president will be their commencement ceremony speaker this weekend.

Indiana officials say Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman was picked to speak during Saturday's ceremony in Assembly Hall because of her years as a leader in American higher education.

IU golf team member John Beringer tells The Herald-Times he spent his college career considering Michigan a rival and was a bit shocked when he heard of Coleman's selection as commencement speaker.

Graduating senior Kody Gilliland says the politically correct thing to say is both schools are in the Big Ten family, but that he was a bit disappointed.

Coleman says while the schools are sports rivals, they are very similar and collaborate in many other ways.
