Salvation Army Reports Gold Coin Found In Kettle

Posted: Updated:

BANGOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Salvation Army says someone placed a gold coin in one of its Michigan donation kettles.

Major Mike Meyers of The Salvation Army tells MLive.com the donation apparently was done "in the spirit of Christmas." He says it was discovered this week by a volunteer bell ringer at a drug store in Bay County's Bangor Township, near Bay City.

Officials plan to take the coin for appraisal.

Columbus Coin & Jewelry owner John DeJohn looked at a photo of the coin. He says it's a Krugerrand that could be worth its weight in gold.

Meyers says The Salvation Army also recently received a gold coin donation in a kettle in the Detroit suburb of Warren. Similar donations have been reported elsewhere in the U.S.
