Hotel Closure Leaves 18 Families Homeless

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) - A closure in Jackson displaced 18 families who were living, and some working, at the Avalon Hotel & Conference Center. They were given just over 24 hours to gather their belongs and get out.

Residents were notified around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night that they had to move out by 11 a.m. Friday morning. The front desk went around to each of the 35 occupied rooms and told them that they were being kicked out, just days before Christmas.

"I know Christmas isn't about the gifts, but when you have a 4-year-old, he's afraid Santa's not gonna have a place. I'm afraid it's going to crush Christmas for him now," said Karena Belcher, who is among the families being kicked out. "[My son] is really confused with Christmas. We had to take our Christmas tree down."

The hotel put up a sign that reads, "The Avalon will be no more after his Fri. We are closing down. New owners ordered it. Sorry." The 51 room hotel and conference center was located at 2000 Bondsteel Dr. in Jackson.

Belcher said many people staying there don't have transportation or emergency finances to rely on and a number of people were working for the hotel so that they could stay warm, dry and protect their children.

"We're wondering how're we going to make it. Where we're going to go and how we're going to get our things there," said Belcher.

Belcher's fiance, Aaron Phillips, also worked for the hotel. So now, the family said they're not only homeless, but also jobless. "It's just a really bad situation that we've all been put into."

The Interfaith Shelter in Jackson has offered to take in everyone being displaced at the Avalon. Meanwhile, the original owner says the sale to the new owner hasn't happened yet and that it "may or may not happen."

6 News was told there will be a press conference at the hotel on Friday at 1p.m. We'll be there and provide all of the updates as they become available.
